Audition Information
Auditions for the 17-18 ballroom team will be held on Tuesday, May 16th at 3:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. Current 6th, 7th, and 8th graders who are planning to attend Elk Ridge Middle School in the 17-18 school year can audition. Home school students may also audition if they are in our boundaries, can commit to the time, and have their own cell phone so they can easily be reached.
Ballroom team meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:00 - 4:30. Do not audition if you cannot commit to this time slot from the first of the year through November. In December, team will meet only on Mondays. The talent show will likely be scheduled the first two weeks of January, and then team will be officially over for the school year. There may be performances in March and April if the team agrees they would like to to them.
You may do the ballroom team AND the school play. We work together to ensure that students may have both experiences. However, if you are planning on doing marching band, you cannot do ballroom as well.
There is a $100 fee for ballroom team. The first $50 is collected in May to pay for your shoes, which will be ordered and will arrive from China over the summer. The other $50 will be for costumes and will be collected in September/October.

Below is the video to learn the audition piece for auditions. A couple things to note:
We went over this during club on April 25th, and will go over again on Tuesday the 2nd and Tuesday the 9th. You are not required to attend any of these practice sessions, but they are highly recommended. I give you the routine in advance because I'm less interested in how fast you learn, and more interested in how hard you work to learn something. Your behavior at these sessions will be noted.
The audition will be at 3:00 in the cafeteria on Tuesday, May 16th. We will practice for about 20-30 minutes, and then the audition will begin. There will be some small paperwork to fill out with your basic information. If you are a 6th grader or not a current student at Elk Ridge, you will need to submit, with your audition paperwork, a letter of recommendation from either a former dance teacher or an academic teacher. As I don't know you and don't have access to your teachers, this information is vital to help me determine if you will be a good fit for team. If you are a current student, know that I will be asking your teachers about you before choosing to put you on team. Punctuality, reliability, good work ethic, and the ability to work with others and in teams is a must. I
*If for some reason you have a reasonable scheduling conflict with the audition date, please email me a video of yourself doing the routine NO LATER than May 15th. Videos taken with your cell phone are fine.
At the audition, you will be filmed in groups of 5 dancing the audition piece twice through. That's it--once you are filmed you can go home! Those chosen for team will not be announced until as late as Wednesday or Thursday of that week.

Below is the video to learn the audition piece for auditions. A couple things to note:
- It uses two styles: Cha-Cha and Samba
- It is SUPPOSED to be hard. Don't worry if it takes you a while to nail it down--that's why I give you so much time!
- This is danced alone with no partner--that why I can evaluate YOU and not be distracted by your partner!

- I am not as interested in your getting the steps perfectly, as I am in your movement and how well you dance it. In other words, I don't care as much if you "mess up" or forget a step. I care more about how you look when you do the step. I will be paying attention to your confidence, hip action, and technique.
- Ladies and gentlemen will do the same routine, but they are slightly different at the end.
- You may begin practicing on your own immediately. Showing up to the auditions without having learned the routine first will make it nearly impossible for you to make team.
